If one can get past That Face, there appears to be a lot to like about the new BMW M4 CS. Meant to slot into the vanishingly slim space between the BMW M4 Competition Coupe with M xDrive; and the limited-run BMW M4 CSL, this model packs a weaponized twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, which sends all of its power to all four wheels with a rear bias.

How weaponized? Try 543 horsepower (20 more than the Comp Coupe) and 479 lb-ft of torque, shuffled to the Earth through an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel-drive. That is enough shove to permit this BMW an accelerative estimate of 3.4 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph), before it presses on to a top speed of 302 km/h (187 mph). The torque makes itself known, too, with the company claiming a run from 80 to 120 clicks (that’s 50 to 75 mph, like you need when you’re dealing with a slow coach on the highway) in just 2.6 seconds in fourth gear.

The electronically controlled dampers of the Adaptive M suspension have a setup specific to the M4 CS, as does the variable-ratio electromechanical steering. M Compound brakes are equipped standard, with ceramics as an option, set behind wheels which are 275/35R19 at the front; and 285/30R20 aft. Track tires are standard, with high-performance rubber a no-cost option, though BMW will charge extra for a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires.

Carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic litters the exterior and cabin, showing up on the roof, hood, front splitter, front air intakes, and numerous other places. Also look for it inside on the centre console, shift paddles, and interior trim elements. This regimen of SlimFast drops 35 kilograms (77 lbs).

It’ll be easy to spot one of these at the track, too, thanks to numerous styling elements, not the least of which are headlamp icons which illuminate in yellow instead of a conventional white, in a nod to the brand’s GT racing cars.

Inside, drivers will find a flat-bottomed Alcantara-clad steering wheel, standard M Carbon bucket seats upholstered in zoomy Merino leather, and BMW’s so-called curved display, which fuses a 12.3-inch information cluster behind the steering wheel and a 14.9-inch central control display angled towards the driver. All manner of techno-wizardry is baked into the iDrive system, including lap timers and settings for drift cosplay.

Priced at $150,000 in Canada, production begins at Plant Dingolfing this July.
